Institute of Contemporary Art Newtown

I.C.A.N.

ABOUT

The Institute of Contemporary Art Newtown (I.C.A.N.) was a contemporary art space originally located on Wilson St, Newtown then at 15 Fowler St, Camperdown,  Sydney Australia.

Its founders and directors were Alex Gawronski, Scott Donovan and Carla Cescon.Working together for 7 years between 2008 – 2015 they deployed their combined experience as practising artists, writers and curators to exhibit a range of local and international practices.

The artists they chose to exhibit worked focused predominantly on conceptual, architectural and/or non-object based concerns. I.C.AN. sought to deliberately address a perceived gap in the contemporary art terrain of Sydney by showing mainly mid-career and established artists in a context that encouraged experimentalism and non-commercial outcomes.
